Back pain can be one of the most debilitating of problems, leading to stress, anxiety and more back pain. Many people find themselves in this seemingly never-ending cycle. This can be especially problematic for the self-employed, as more and more working days are lost due to back pain. But it’s not all bad news . . .

I have seen thousands of patients over the years and a very high percentage of those patients have found themselves back on the road to recovery in no time at all – even when there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel.

The important thing to remember is that the cause must be found and corrected.

Shoulder problems can be very challenging, and for good reason. Just when progress is made the patient, through no fault of their own, does something to set themselves back. This is because we are constantly using our shoulders. For example, when we pick up a young child, when we tie our shoe laces and even when we make a cup of tea or coffee.

The shoulder is vulnerable to injury, as it is a freely moving joint while others are limited in their motion. There is much soft tissue in the shoulder including ligaments, tendons and muscles. Each of these has the tendency to be compromised by improper motion or overuse.

These ligaments, tendons and muscles all work together to create the movement and strength required for proper function, making diagnosis of the troubled area more difficult. The good news is that I have seen thousands of patients with shoulder pain and, over time, most have responded positively.

It can be a long journey back to normality, but – as with all health problems – the cause of the pain must be found and corrected.

Neuralgia of the sciatic nerve, commonly known as sciatica, can occur at all ages of life. But it is between 35 and 50 years that they are the most frequent. This is not a disease in itself but the sign that one of the two sciatic nerves (one is on each side) is compressed at its root, causing severe pain.

This pain follows the path of the nerve. It often reaches the buttock and thigh and can extend to the foot.

The sciatic nerves are the largest in the body running down the back of each leg. For some people, the pain caused by irritation of these sciatic nerves can be almost unbearable – with little or no relief.

But few people connect the problem to the spine where the sciatic nerve roots exit from the spinal cord. When these nerve roots are irritated or pinched, it can cause an extremely painful flare-up of one or both of the nerves down the legs.
